Moving Forward

On October 12, 2016, a civil suit was filed against representatives of the RCMP involved in the death of Peter John de Groot.

This suit requests that declarations be made regarding the violation of Peter's rights, security of the person, value and sanctity of his life under both S. 7 and S.15 of the Canadian Charter for Human Rights. It requests both orders and remedies for the damage caused by the discriminatory treatment and resultant disproportionate use of lethal force against Peter, who was a person with a cognitive disability, entitled to equal treatment before and under the law.

If successful, this case will set a precedent for this country for the defense of the rights of every individual, including racial equality, sexual equality, mental disability and physical (including cognitive) disability and will hopefully give pause to authorities in times of crisis to provide the time and space necessary to make considered decisions that save lives.

It is our hope that in future resolution of this case will enable a significant contribution to solutions regarding issues of discrimination and animal charity, as noted during the press conference given on October 21, 2014.

Thank you to those who have taken the time to write, those that have offered condolences and support as well as those who have actively made efforts to help us through this time.
